Just Three Points Races Left at Michaels Mercer Raceway
(Mercer, PA July 30, 2019): Michaels Mercer Raceway will present a Fast Five racing program this Saturday, August 3, plus the Junior Sprints will be in action. This comes after a highly successful Michaels Memorial Show which featured the Diehl Ram Big Blocks versus the BRP Modified Tour. Rex King, Sr., the driver with probably the most experience rounding the Mercer oval, came away with the big win, but his son finished second, which was good enough to give Rex Jr. the points lead with just three contests left in the championship run.
Although the Kings occupy first and second in the standings, separated by the narrowest one-point margin, another veteran driver is still within range. Dave Murdick could snare the Diehl Ram Modified title with some luck, as he is only eleven points out of the lead! Lonny Riggs has the grip on fourth, but fifth is up for grabs. Brad Rapp, who retired early in Saturday’s go, is only two markers ahead of Kyle Fink and Rick Regalski. Other racers in the top ten who could make some noise in The August 3 event are Eric Martin, Bob Warren, and Skip Moore. Surprisingly absent from the top ten are Jimmy Holden, J.R. McGinley, and Jeremiah Shingledecker, to name a few. These drivers, and many more could contend for the win.
In the Turn 4 Toilets Fastrak Modifieds, four drivers are in the hunt for the track championship.
Shayne Izzo still holds the top spot. He leads Brian Schaffer by eight counters and uncle Jerry Schaffer by nineteen. Brian Sadler is fourth, twenty-one off the pace, but he could move ahead if he can score his second win of the season. Steve Slater and Eric Martin are separated by just two points. While they are not eliminated from any hope of a championship, they will need a lot of things to go their way if they are to challenge for the crown. Jim Bryce, Michael Kristyak, Gage Priester, and Tom Urey, are in the top ten, and fans can count on them to turn in creditable performances every timethey are on the track.
Kyle Colwell scored his first win at the track in the Racesaver 305 Sprints, presented by Hards Welding and Fabrication and River Valley Butcher Block. Jacob Gomola is just two points behind, and Greg Dobrosky is eight in arears, so either one of them could climb to the top with some success this Saturday. Teenager Chase Matheny is solidly in fourth, and Steve Cousins is looking to build on his career best second place finish so he can close the gap on him. A dozen or more other open wheel stars are expected to compete.
In the remaining two divisions making up the Fast Five, the respective points leaders have substantial margins. Vivian Jones wants to put the capper on her best season ever in the Barris Trucking Modified Lites. With 23 points separating her from Dusty Frantz, she just needs consistent finishes to claim the title. Joe Campbell seems to have an insurmountable lead, 48 points to be exact, over Mike Porterfield. Plenty of other racers will factor into the outcomes, for sure, even if they have little hope to take the titles away from Jones and Campbell, respectively.
The gates will swing open at 4 p.m. to let the competitors into the pit area. The spectators can stream in starting at 5 p.m. Practice will begin at 6:30, with racing at 7 p.m.
The ticket price for this fun-filled program will be $12 for adults and $10 for seniors (60+). Children (13 and under) will be admitted for free, so long as they are in the company of a paying patron. The Pit Passes will be $30, except for seniors and children (10 and under). They will be admitted to the Pits for just $25.
If you cannot make it out to Michaels Mercer Raceway this week, get ready for the invasion of the Patriot Sprint Tour on August 10. The Fast Five will will be back on August 17 to have their final points fling. August 24 will be the back-up for the final night of points should inclement weather affect the August 17 show.
